【雨打萍日记】雨为迎奥运曾试编过英语100句[实际是200句----两个人对话，一问一答]----因为不想正式面世，只给亲朋好友看着玩，所以没人知道那葫芦里卖的是什么药。更不晓得那些药材都是怎么采集回来的。今天想说说那100句的来龙去脉，以便让一位想继续学点口语的博友开开心。

在美国一位老师帮助下，从南到北，从东到西，一共转了28个州。老师整天给我开他的福特车，没完没了地问我中国的事，差不多一个暑假都是这么过的。晚上我们把车停在森林里或湖边上，睡在英文叫air-mattress的气垫床上。Norman Hines老师清早起来用森林里的干松枝烧火煎鸡蛋时，我睡眼惺忪，睁开眼一看一只非常美丽的小松鼠大模大样地丛树上跳了下来，要偷吃我的面包。这时，与其说是想哄它跑开，倒不如说是想仔细欣赏它那又长又粗的大尾巴更上瘾。这时，又发现高高的树顶上，一对漂亮的有深蓝色羽毛的小鸟也开始觊觎我的面包渣……大概从古至今就是这童话般的真实生活点燃了人们与人和大自然进行感情交流的欲望，于是，想学说话，学中国话，也学外国话。我相信任何复杂的思想感情都应该是可以用言语来表达清楚的。但是，如何能确切的表达则非一日之功，非坚持长期下苦功夫不可。

口语中不合常规语法，不合逻辑的现象不乏其例。人们只能在具体实际交流或沟通时，才会真正学到所谓地道的英语或其它外语。学外语，尤其学口语，光靠固定的教材是很不够的。必须在真实的社会生活大课堂里学习。

如果想吃鸡蛋，你至少要知道鸡蛋的五种做法才能说清楚你想吃的是怎么做出来的鸡蛋。如，

1．        Sunny-side up  （指只煎一面的鸡蛋）

2．        Fried（两面煎的）

3．        Hard oil（油炸的）

4．        Soft-oiled（煎得嫩一点的）

5．        Over easy（搅拌均匀后煎的）

而这些说法，一般口语书你是不容易找到的，即使你看见了，如果你仅根据字面意思，你也未必明白其内在含义。只有亲自看老师做鸡蛋时，老师提醒你，你又心领神会，才能学到家。

诺尔曼·海恩斯[他希望我叫他老海]在夏天的旅途中自觉或不自觉地教给我的东西太丰富多彩了，让我受益终生。一个暑假的旅游所获得的英语资料成就了我《美利坚语林漫游》一系列论文。

如果真的好奇想窥一眼，我将出示一点有助于提高学习效益的观点和材料。但决不愿意把自己的博客变成英语博课。

在疾驰的轿车里老海给我印象最深的一句话是”Please give me five.”他说话时把手伸给我，掌心向上，当时不知他所云，因此，也不知怎样应对。还以为他要半美元零钱买Pepsi cola饮料呢。后来才知道他是想放松一下----让我击一下他的掌心----然后我再和他做同样的动作，也把手伸给他，也掌心向上，让他再击我的掌心……

这里的关键词是five，指的是有五个指头的手。这个例句再一次说明英语的表达能力有时未必与自己的词汇量成正比。在词汇量相对少的情况下，如果能充分运用自己所学的常用词汇或表达方式也可以有较强的表达能力或交际能力。因此，那种总以为会背的单个单词越多就越有表达能力的看法和做法未必完全可取。应该充分发挥自己已经学过的常用词及其句型或固定搭配的作用才是上策。

     据统计，老舍的《骆驼祥子》一共有10余万字，但其中不断重复使用的汉字一共才2413个。历史上曾有过一个“东印度公司”，其职员们的工作语言是英语，而他们每天所常用的英文单词也不超过900个。我们国家的学生，包括博士生不会写地道的请假条的大有人在。我们的外语教学思路并不科学，误了几代人。（待续）

【雨打萍日记】昨天宣布奥运会鸟巢工程终于竣工了，长出了一口气，脸上最最要紧的饰物终于贴上了，心里美滋滋的。但看到北京到处仍然在大兴土木，破土动工，诸如新建快速公交车站等早就该干完的活还在如新娘现上轿现为戴上金儿环而不得不穿耳孔一样忙碌着，实在有点替北京的官们着急。北京前门的所谓最具老北京特色的大栅栏[读“dà-shí-là”]街的改造工程也说已经完工，可是人们坐公交车眼睛仍然看到一座古色古香的灰砖墙边藏着的是数不清的破砖碎瓦，垃圾如山，让人根本看不到8月8日前有完工的可能。

再看北京一些旧有的街道或人文景观更叫人不容乐观。到处可见的仍然是可以私刻印章办证的招揽客户的写得歪歪扭扭的手机号码----街道的“小脚侦击队”给涂上一次，刻印章的贩子就再写一次，恶性循环，没完没了。一个有权威的政府养了那么多管事的，就是管不了这类“小广告”----真邪了门了。

再看北京曾火爆一时的世界公园，几天前笔者也想步别人的后尘，一睹为快，可是，一看把印度泰吉陵给石刻成MHHAL,[正确写法是MAHAL或 Taj Mahal]，把埃及金字塔中的法老时而石刻成Pharan时而又刻成Pharon[正确写法是Pharaoh 或Pharos（美国英语）]这类明显的拼写错误不能不叫人扫兴。人造景观本来就先天不足，再用这虎人的英文字给减彩就更味如嚼蜡了。令人深思的是该园开放15年来一直就这么错着，没人管。如果奥运会期间正巧赶上印度和埃及朋友来参观，他们会有何感想？听说几年前北京就请了洋大人来纠正类似的错误，但是为何倒计时都屈指可数了，这类中英文对照的文字错误仍然在“我行我素”？

时下，有一种感觉，用俗话说是“捏着眼皮擤鼻涕----有劲儿用不上”----干着急。在北京开第29届奥运会的日子就要到了，官们，不要以为人们在杞人忧天----该是你们和北京人少睡点觉的时候了。

建议把有限时间用到正地方。没必要非勉强叫“小脚侦击队”们非学几句蹩脚的英语以显示国人的水平。倒可以让她们教外国朋友学点中文或汉语，这倒是我们的强项。老是想迎合人家的口味，不自信的炎黄子孙总愿意当孙子，何必呀。

【印度泰吉陵】全名为泰吉·玛哈尔陵，是莫卧儿王朝第五代皇帝沙•贾汗Shah Jahan Sh为其爱妃泰吉•玛哈尔Taj Mahal 所建，故名。始建于 1631 年，每天动用民工 2万名，耗资4000多万卢比，历时22年才告工成，为世界七大建筑奇迹之一。据说他原本想在此对面再给自己建一座黑色的陵墓，与爱妃遥遥相望，可地基还没打起就被儿子篡位，被关进阿哥拉堡，每日只有遥望泰吉陵，以泪洗面，死后与爱妃一起葬在泰吉陵。[泰吉陵门票为500卢比+ 250卢比，约15美元。]

【埃及金字塔】Pyramids in Egypt

    埃及金字塔建于４５００年前，是古埃及法老（Pharaoh）即国王和王后的陵墓。陵墓是用巨大石块修砌成的方锥形建筑，因形似汉字“金”字，故译作“金字塔”。埃及迄今已发现大大小小的金字塔１１０座，大多建于埃及古王朝时期。最大最有名的是位于开罗西南面的吉萨高地上的祖孙三代金字塔----大金字塔（也称胡夫Khufu金字塔）、海夫拉Khafre金字塔 和门卡乌拉Menkaure 金字塔，与其周围众多的小金字塔形成金字塔群，为埃及金字塔建筑艺术的顶峰。

雨读杜牧，步其《泊秦淮》大韵，未推敲其平仄，效颦二首：第一首是悼念因飞机失事在救灾中罹难的几位空军英雄的；第二首里的话是对着救灾医疗队那些白衣天使们说的。先用英文给老师和同学说了大意，但自己觉得诗味太淡了，于是就想借助中文的羽毛美化一下。效果如何，也许仍叫朋友们尴尬-----因为谁都不肯在博面上直说博主写得寒酸----也只好自己先说了。好在自己也已经哭够了，赈灾表现还不算太寒酸，再借唐代杜牧《泊秦淮》的余味粉饰一下自己的感情外衣也可以暂时画个句号了------从此不再继续骂苍天无道以显示自己大灾出大爱的诚意了。

【英译赘言】

（1）英译用的是“aabb”压韵模式，即第一行和第二行压韵或第三行和第四行压韵。前两行与后两行不是同韵，这与中文诗格律不尽相同。（2）雨希望尽可能多地保留原文信息，不赞成轻易简化或淡化原文的细节而只复制原文的大意。应尽量让读者能捕捉到原文的脉搏。比如，第一行中“烟”“水”“月”“沙”等信息在译文The haze covered the cold river beach in the moonlight中都直接或间接有所体现。（Haze / river/ beach / moonlight）

（3）但是，有的词语不能直译，如果把“商女”直译为prostitute（妓女）则有伤原诗的大雅，雨是用了相当于中文“舞女”等字样的词dancing girl，这个词内涵有一定弹性，可褒可贬。美国作家Ronald Schiller曾用dancing girl来描写秦始皇生母身份。这里，雨想借鉴该作家已经建立起来的词语联想机制，这样选词可能是有益的。

（4）《后庭花》不难译，但西方英语读者未必知道相关的历史背景，只能加注释了。

【Flowers behind Palace】As a melody to the Chinese Ci-poem, Flowers behind Palace is just the title of a song in the ancient time, which was used to entertain the emperor and his family as well as highest officials in the court. Poet Du Mu quoted such a song’s title as a symbol of sex mania. It’s not accidental for the poet to criticize their indulgence of debauchery. The author writing Flowers behind Palace was Monarch Chen as the last emperor of the South Dynasty (420-479), and he was good in music and poetry but poor in investigation on the common people. He was living an extravagant and dispatched life every day.

【《后庭花》】《泊秦淮》诗中提及的《后庭花》即《玉树后庭花》，它是一首乐府吴声歌曲。杜牧以这支歌曲作为声色亡国的象征并非偶然，因为它正诞生于这个“六朝金粉地”(南京)，其内容纯系绮靡颓废的亡国之音，其作者陈后主又是以声色亡国的昏君。

丽字芳林对高阁，新妆艳质本倾城。

映户凝娇乍不进，出帷含态笑相迎。

妖姬脸似花含露，玉树流光照后庭。

　【陈后主】陈后主姓陈名叔宝，字元秀，是南朝(420-479)最后一个王朝——陈朝的末代皇帝。其人长于深宫，不谙民情，却精通音律，喜作艳词。他继位之后，在政治上疾忠臣如仇敌，视小民似草芥，横征暴敛，刑罚苛重；生活上穷奢极欲，酷好声色，终日游宴，常在醉乡。

【杜牧】（公元８０３～８５２年）唐代诗人。字牧之。陕西长安人。祖父杜佑是中唐有名的宰相和史学家。从青年起抱有恢复唐王朝繁荣昌盛的理想。２３岁时写成《阿房宫赋》给统治者敲了警钟。杜牧生性耿介，不屑逢迎权贵，从而对社会政治持清醒的批判态度。但抱负难以施展，有苦闷，有“风流艳事”流传。他主张：“凡为文以意为主，以气为辅，以辞采章句为之兵卫”（《答庄充书》）。他最推崇李白、杜甫、韩愈、柳宗元（《冬至日寄小侄阿宜诗》）。《献诗启》中说：“某苦心为诗，未求高绝，不务奇丽，不涉习俗，不今不古，处于中间。”与晚唐另一位杰出的诗人李商隐齐名，并称“小李杜”。他的古体诗题材广阔，笔力峭健。他的近体诗则以文词清丽、情韵跌宕见长。一些抒情写景的小诗如《泊秦淮》、《山行》、《江南春绝句》等，都能用质朴的口语、简洁的白描，传达出悠远不尽的诗情画意，历来传诵人口。而象《赤壁》、《题商山四皓庙》、《过华清宫绝句三首》之类咏史绝句，则又叙议结合，警拔精悍，往往在人们意想不到的地方自出手眼,读来一新耳目。

Reports on Heroes’ Hard Work after the Earthquake

[Rainleaf’s diary]The first-time report on the heroes’ hard work of the earthquake relief mission held on June 11, 9:30 am in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing. The report is characterized by a distinct personality. Listening to it, I really want to say something about it.

     从前一说到天安门西侧人民大会堂去听报告或看演出，总有一种进宫殿走红地毯那种庄严神圣的感觉，这次场内外的北京人的感觉和雨差不多----变了----人们仿佛真的走进了汶川的腹地，亲自目睹了那里发生的一切。

Usually, one was told to take part in an activity in the Great Hall of the People at the west side of Tiananmen Square, he used to imagine a picture of imperial palace with a long red carpet, and felt a little bit nervous. However, inside the hall or outside the hall, those who listened to the report felt that they returned to Wenchuan County where the earthquake happened on May 12, 2008 as if they were really entering its hinterland so that they would personally witness what happened.

压根儿没想到玩博客居然能把自己玩哭了，还没动笔写今天的日记呢，眼泪已经偷偷滚了下来。老实说，雨最看不起演戏的人，即使他演得真像个英雄，雨也从不把演员当成英雄而会成为他的“粉丝”。今天自己倒默默地演起戏来了----感受哭的意识。雨是真哭了，虽然自己独处暗室无人能证明自己是真哭还是演戏。反正平时谁若想让雨真地哭一场真没那么容易，这一哭至少证明了英模的报告的确有震撼力。

I have never had an idea that I will shed tears in writing my diary. But it’s true that my tears secretly were rolling down from my eyes. To be honest, I despise actors or actresses even if they really look like a hero. I have never wanted to be a fan of them. That is, I have no idea to play an actor even if I am really moved by the heroes’ good quality. Although no one can prove that I really wept in my lonely rooming house. Really I do not weep easily but my tears naturally shed while writing my diary after listening heroes’ report.

英模报告的突出特点是----

1．一改传统报告会先说些客套话的老模式，报告开门见山，简短但又不乏精彩的细节。

2．朴素自然，无任何故意雕琢加工或拔高的痕迹。

3．英雄也洒泪，洒泪也英雄。台上台下互动，流泪可算是雨首次才发现的一种人类默契现象。此时无声胜有声，理解只需看眼睛。

Their reports are with the following prominent characteristics----

(1) it’s with no polite-thing words but all the heroes’ speech seems to be concise and to the point with never-forgetting details.

(2) Like a good-telling story paper, it’s naturally plain without any intentional revised marks or signs.

(3) Heroes also shed tears but the tearful still are true heroes. Both the audience and heroes on the stage are full of great love and sympathy in mind to all the people suffering from the earthquake. I’d like to think shedding tears means a birth of a tacit understanding as a social phenomenon. At this time, the silent-spoken understanding just means looking at tearful eyes.

也许别人早发现了这种哭鼻子的现象，但至今还没见过有哪位博友敢在博客上大言不惭地像雨这样来申请专利。

雨想说，从5月12日到6月12日，这一个月应叫“流泪月”----以后就该如纪念“红五月”那样纪念这个“流泪月”，而且年年纪念，常胜不衰。

雨还想写支《唤魂曲》-----

眼中一滴汶川泪/天堂万魂谁梦谁/

五月泪水已成河/不见小妮踩云归/

梦里依稀红舞鞋/废墟堆里刚找回/

生死未卜两条路/一逝足成千古恨/

Perhaps some found such a tearful phenomenon much earlier than I, but so far I have not seen any solid evidence of applying for the patent so as to witness that tears shedding means mutual understanding in the Blog. However, it’s Rainleaf that dare to apply for a patent of the tear-shedding phenomenon.

Rainleaf would like to say that the month from May 12 to June 12 should be called a "tear-shedding-month” as  the" Red May " we did, and we should commemorate such a special month year by year with our ever-lasting love memory to all the victims. At the same time we will never forget all the people who have had great contribution since the serious earthquake happened.

Right now Rainleaf also wants to write a song "Call the Paradise-Human Soul to Return "-----

武警某师参谋长王毅同志报告的题目是《31小时生死挺进震中汶川》[ 2008-06-11 09:49:09 ]

【雨打萍日记】6月8日对雨有双重意义。其一是在这一天曾见到了非常关心艺术创造性的大科学家；其二是首次感受到了伟大诗人，大政治家投江殉国的农历5月5日成了全民的盛大节日。

The sweet mugwort smell sweeter in spring late.

The new sweet sedge used to drive off the ghost.

In my dream vaguely 1000-sails sailing fast,

The voiceless sailors shed tears seeking for the poet.

To the Moon-Girl, the Orange-Song I recite to the sky.

Raising my head I repeat Ask-the-Sky of Poet Qu’s cry.

If no pioneer Qu’ great poetry as a marching guideline,

Perhaps there would be no great poet Li Bai.

Ancient rivers flow restlessly year by year.

Modern people spend night by night deeper.

Flying Dragon Boats start suddenly in laughter,

at fish throwing Zongzi-Dumplings into the river.**

Why do the Chinese people behave so well?

for they’d like to take Poet Qu as an example.

或许楚辞开先河

李白得以成诗人

千古江河千古情

万家灯火夜深沉

龙舟起锚笑声飞

粽子掷处鱼知音

缘何神州情切切

代代苦恋屈子心

【雨注】 (1)屈原（约公元前339～约前278）。战国时期楚国诗人、政治家；已被公认为世界文化名人而受到广泛纪念。主要作品辑录于《楚辞》里，共有25篇,即《离骚》《天问》《九歌》（11篇）《九章》（9篇）《远游》《卜居》《渔父》。据《史记·屈原列传》司马迁语,还有《招魂》。有些学者认为《大招》也是屈原作品；但也有人怀疑《远游》以下诸篇及《九章》中若干篇章非出自屈之手。

（2） 屈原有两位知名弟子，即宋玉和婵娟。有学者称《橘颂》可能是其学生宋玉之作。《橘颂》36节，约144个字。《橘颂》这首诗明确阐述了他对理想人格的追求。

（3）《天问》是屈原一部长诗。全诗九十五节，今存三百七十六句，一百七十余问。如果说《离骚》是中国文学史上第一部抒情长诗的话，《天问》则是中国文学史上的第一部长篇史诗，而且是创造了空前绝后的问难形式的一部远古神话和上古史大纲。

（4）艾蒿：一种菊科的多年生草本植物(mugwort----Artemisia argyi),叶制成艾绒,供针灸用。

(5)粽子：给没吃过粽子的外国朋友可用英文解释如下：

As a kind of Chinese dumplings, it’s made of glutinous rice (or other glutinous grain) packed by the reed leaves, which looks like a very small pyramid in form, and then cooked in boiling water. When well done, you may eat. [Don,t worry the foreigners will eat the reed leaves at all.](用苇子叶将糯米或大黄米等有粘性的谷物包装成小金字塔式的形状食品，然后用开水煮熟即可食。)[不必担心外国朋友会把粽叶当菜吃了。]

【雨打萍日记】1999年6月8日欧美同学会（留美）曾在北京大学医学部组织一次“艺术与科学关系研讨会”，诺贝尔奖得主李政道学长亲临会议，从此，北京更多的学长们才知道他那关于科学与艺术融合的精辟论断是对人类认识论的历史性贡献。

他说: “如一个硬币的两面，科学和艺术源于人类活动最高尚的部分，都追求着深刻性、普遍性……”

        6月8日对他人是个普通的日子，对雨则是特殊的日子----的确是追求“好好学习，天天向上”的日子。那天，雨把自己喜欢的校长、老师、同学和好朋友都请来了----高兴了好半天。

从此开始学会了用有钱人兜里的钱来办自己愿意办的事----真的，后来又给北大一位老师办了他的国际诗歌翻译艺术研讨会。。

这次地震雨没赶上，又赚了。本来是想“乐宜思蜀”，想应约去游历蜀国的名山大川的，但由于从皇城根到水晶湖往来琐事不断就未能飞蜀践约。不过，怕乐极生悲，所以自己也做了倒霉的准备，已经留下了博嘱：“如果雨被埋下，/ 再不醒来，/ 把他心中歌掏出来……/”

亲爱的朋友，今天先不贫嘴了，因为最近雨的教练很忙, 也抽不出时间来教。就先认真学学李政道论述（摘编）吧。雨已将其老老实实地译成了英文，供还想学点比较语言学的博友参考。

李政道 《论科学与艺术》

On Science and Art

艺术和科学的共同基础是人类的创造力，它们追求的目标都是真理的普遍性。艺术，例如诗歌、绘画、音乐等等，用创新的手法去唤起每个人的意识或潜意识中深藏着的、已经存在的情感。如李白（公元701－762年）在《把酒问月》中写道：

On Science and Art

Art and science is the common basis of human creativity, they are pursuing the goal of universal truth. Arts, such as poetry, painting, music, etc., with innovative methods arouse the awareness of every person’s subconsciousness and emotion. Such as Li Bai (701-762 AD) wrote in his poem "Ask the Moon by Holding a Cup of Wine" like this:

    青天有月来几时？

    我今停杯一问之。

    ………………

    今人不见古时月，

    今月曾经照古人。

    古人今人若流水，

    公看明月皆如此。

How long has the moon hung in the blue sky?

Let me ask the heaven while stopping my cup of wine.

The present man didn’t see the ancient moonlight; 

the present moon looked at the ancient man’s eyes.

The present after the ancient is like a running current,

watching the bright moon as the ancient did in the past.

    而三百年后，苏轼（公元1037－1101年）作了《水调歌头》，他写道：

    明月几时有？

    把酒问青天。

    ……………

    人有悲欢离合，

    月有阴晴圆缺，

    此事古难全。

    但愿人长久，

    千里共婵娟。

     And 300 years later, poet Su Si (1037－1101) wrote another poem Top-Water-Melody as follows: 

How many times will the full moon rise?

Upholding a cup of wine, I ask the blue sky.

Man always changes with vicissitudes of his life              

the moon alternates from the full to the crescent,

now it will rain, then shine with the sun bright

Nothing has been perfect even since the ancient time.

       However, may you live a long, long life.

       Let the moon we share shine 1000 miles.

在咏诵这些诗的时候，它们的相似之点和不同之处同样感动着读者。尽管李白、苏轼生活的时代和今天的社会已经完全不同了，但这些几百年乃至一千年前的诗在今天人们的心中仍然能够引发强烈的感情共鸣。

 The above two poems are not exactly the same either in content or in form, but both of them have the same strong effect to have readers moved in their heart feelings.  Li Po’s (Li Bai) life or Su Shi's life different from us, but their poems written several hundred years or over 1,000 years ago still move the present people and they can still trigger a strong emotional resonance on us.

同样，我们现在阅读莎士比亚的著作，或者观赏莎士比亚的戏剧，不论是原文或译文，也有着和几百年前英国的读者和观众相似的情感共鸣。

Similarly, when we now read the works of Shakespeare, or watch Shakespeare's drama, whether the original text or the translation, we have similar emotional resonance as the British readers and viewers had several hundred years ago.

情感越珍贵，反响越普遍，跨越时空、社会的范围越广泛，艺术就越优秀。

The more valuable the emotion is，the more repercussions widespread across time and space with more extensive scope of the community, thus the arts are more perfect.

没有情感的因素和促进，我们的智慧能够开创新的道路吗？而没有智慧的情感能够达到完美的意境吗？所以，科学和艺术是不可分的，两者都在寻求真理的普遍性。

Without emotional factors and the promotion of our wisdom we cannot open up a new road.  Without the emotional wisdom we cannot achieve the perfect mood. Therefore, science and art are inseparable, and both of them are in the search for universal truth.

普遍性一定植根于自然，而对自然的探索则是人类创造性的最崇高的表现。事实上如一个硬币的两面，科学和艺术源于人类活动最高尚的部分，都追求着深刻性、普遍性、永恒和富有意义。

The so-called universality or general principle rooted in nature, and the exploration of nature is of human creativity considered as the noblest performance. In fact, science and art look like the two sides of a coin, science and art of the highest part derived from human activities going for profound, universal, eternal and meaningful goal.

Science and art are the two exotic flowers of the whole culture of humanity, and the different means by which human beings to understand the world and change is, as well as the two realms which have distinct laws yet have closely been related since ancient times. <A Versatile Girl 多才多艺的许雁妮>

诺贝尔奖得主李政道认为艺术和科学是一枚硬币的两个面[Rainleaf’s diary] 【雨打萍日记】 Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao made a good comparison between science and art, and that the relationship of the two subjects is like two sides of one coin. I’ve met him just once and had no time enough to ask him for more information about his original consideration to form such an idea. However, his view is admirable, and even I admire him for music appreciation. If I were given my childhood once again, I would definitely have to learn something artistic, even if I was determined to learn science and engineering instead of the polytechnic school of literature and history.

It’s the coming Children's Day. I’d like to emphasize that learning something artistic seems to give children two wings to fly higher, so we should have an art-learning story told to everyone today.

It’s about half a year ago, as an alumnus, I returned our university campus to participate in a get-together party where a Pipa solo was pleasantly played. The player’s fingers were so skillful to puzzle my staring eyes and left me very good impressions that I was moved to write a few lines like this:

完全出乎意料——今天突然发现这位演奏者竟然是在搜狐网上亮相的采访中央电视台名主持敬一丹的记者——“哇！ 好厉害——她是谁呀？

”It’s totally unexpected for me to see a picture that as a part-time reporter, the Pipa player had an interview with the CCTV anchor Jing Yidan on <sohu.com> internet

"Wow! Pretty good! Who is she?"

原来是校友呀，真是无巧不成书。她就是正读大二的许雁妮呀。哼，也巧，她刚好看过雨给学校两位外国语言专家写的博客和照片。

Ah, it’s an alumna,  Really, no coincidence, no story. She is Xu Yanni studying in her second year at our university. Hem, another coincidence is that she just read my Blog paper with pictures of two foreign language experts teaching at our school.

看来雨的应时（儿童节）的博客今天只能写给这个大女孩了。好在我们曾在今年新年前后（记不得具体时间了）见过一面，还有印象，不至于张冠李戴。

Well, it’s an good idea that I should write something  about the versatile big girl in my Blog on Childre’s Day. Fortunately, we met each other around the New Year Day (Sorry,I can not remember the exact date). So still have I  had very good impressions of her and I can distinguish her from others.

真没想到她竟如此多才多艺。她既有管理琴弦的灵巧手指，又有善于精密思索的头脑，既是好学生又是很好的社会活动家；作为个人，她不仅是“牛人“能干“牛事”，又有很好的组织才能。

I never thought she was so versatile. She has so dexterous fingers to manage musical strings.She is not only good at her hands but her head. She is both a good student and a good social activist. As for her personality, Not only she is as tough as a cow working hard but also wise enough to organize others to work effectively.

居然能一跃跳出花乡的校园，直落北大的静园，并请来敬一丹做自己喜欢的节目，实在有巧夺天工的本事，其运筹帷幄，精心策划的韬略可想而知。

She is so competent that she could easily jump from our Flower-Town campus to Peking University’s Static-Park campus to have Jing Yidan do their favorite programs. It’s true that her “art beats nature”，from which her talent is easily seen, and that her devised strategies, carefully planned program could be still easily imagined. 但人们并不都清楚这位受过大同云岗石窟文化套熏陶的女孩有着怀抱琵琶半遮面的艺术生涯。艺术的确成了她成长和高飞的翅膀。

However,more people are not clear of her growth development of her artistic career affected by nature and nurture out of the Datong-Yungang-Grottoes culture since her playing Pipa a little bit shyly from her childhood.. Indeed she has grown up with her artistic wings that help her flying much higher.

今年5月14日她“与敬一丹的零距离接触”，于北京大学静园，采访央视著名节目主持人敬一丹。因为8年前在第四次全国少代会上，她就结识了敬一丹。美丽的记忆犹如已经铺就了走近名人的红地毯。

On May 14, 2008, she was coming close to Jing Yidan", in the Static Park, Peking University campus with an interview with CCTV famous presenter Jing Yidan. Over eight years ago in the Fourth National Juvenile Congress, she met Jing Yidan once. Such a beautiful memory like a long piece of red carpet turned the way to meet the well-known presenter or anchor Jing Yidan.

这次采访活动时间虽然短暂，但对她个人和学校的影响将是深远的。我们有理由断言她的美丽的琴声是她能跨越时空的精灵，似乎可以引导她到从一个高峰走向另一个高峰，而她的才情也将因为她占有美丽的琴声而更加发扬广大。对艺术的追求似乎也是她为自己才华在增容。正如有的网友谈到对她采访的感想时所说“妮子!加油!你的高度会不断提升!”是的，现在没出校门，她就比自己的同龄人多跨出一大步，的确，难能可贵。但她自己深知“自己要做的还很多很多。”（雨打萍/ 文）

This interview is short in time but its effect is long on her personality and our institution. We have reason to conclude that her artistic talent will cross time and space like the wizard that could lead her from a peak to another peak while her artistic talent will also occupy more and more people’s mind her beautiful music. And what she is to seek for in art must develop her ability and wisdom. Just as one of netizens wrote after reading her interview story, "Nizi! Come on! You will continue to raise the height!" Sure! As an undergraduate student, she has made her first bigger step than others at her age. Therefore, it is commendable! But she still emphasizes "I should try my best to do much more." Rainleaf’s Poem for Premier Wen's Return

to the Earthquake-County

【Rainleaf’s Diary】From Beijing Morning Post and other media, I was heard of the news with pictures about Premier Wen’s return to Beichuan County where the earthquake happened seriously. I felt as if a warm stream were flowing into my mind. During my childhood, when I was sick, I extremely hoped my mother would keep me company even if she said nothing or did nothing. Right now the news arouses my good memory of my sweet home again. Yes, people either in distress or hardship, particularly hope that their loved ones will be close to them, which means a great comfort and enjoyment. Moreover, our state top leaders are really the biggest backer to the disaster area. So everyone must be excited with Premier’s return to seeing the disaster suffers in some original sites where he worked to provide the disaster relief. In my inner world, Premier Wen seems to have come here not from today but a few years ago when the Yangtze River flood-fighting front line in the approaching storm. He stood firm with the people together, whose cordial image long ago still carved in the hearts of the Chinese people.

Today, as time goes on, people already are not accustomed to using "long live" or "Long, long live" to express the love to their top leaders, therefore, I would like to write a few lyric lines to show my love and respect to dear Premier Wen and all the top leaders serving for the people during the disaster period of time.

But we are still much more concerned

 about our Premier.

He is too resolute to cry

But in great pain day and night.

His 50,000 compatriots will never be back from the paradise in the sky.

All the victims always occupy Premier’s mind even in his dream at night.

As a strong guy,

I have no need to cry

but just a few lines to write.

<温总理再回北川  雨泪如注化诗笺>

【雨打萍日记】欣闻北京晨报等媒体发了温家宝总理《再回北川》的报道和图片，一种难以抑制住的暖流催人泪下，于是，小时侯生病总希望妈妈在跟前陪伴着的感觉又油然而生。是的，人在危难时，特别希望自己的亲人在场，即使他们什么话都不说，什么事都不做对自己来说也是一种莫大的安慰和享受。更何况是真正的国家最大的靠山来了呢——怎能不叫人激动呢！在雨的心目中，总理是从几年前长江两岸的抗洪前线的风雨中走来的。他的与人民风雨同舟的亲民形象早就刻在了中国人民的心上。

Dear Wax,

Dear Veith,

For a rather long time, have I had very good memories of your class since I observed. As a friend or a pen pal of yours, I’d like to write a few lines to praise your effective teaching to our leading body, my colleagues both at home and abroad as well as my Blog friends. Your effective teaching left me very deep impressions of your teachinging English as a Second language in China.

The following is just an outline of my paper. If something wrong, please don’t hesitate to tell me pretty soon. (M.Z. Rainleaf)

1．     似乎不用特别固定的教材，但有固定的教学思路，总发给有趣的故事或活页短文；总能“惹”你有话要说。

2．     教师总是兴致勃勃，和颜悦色，特别平易近人，从不死站在讲台的跟前——总是走到学生中间，与学生一起做Pair-Work 或Group-Work，具体帮助学生讨论，进行实际的语言交流。

3．     顺其自然地引出若干个关键词语或表达方式，并予以讲解，突出重点，旨在帮助学生复习和具体运用。

4．     给学生当小先生的机会，既可讲解个人体会，又对同学的观点进行点评。课堂上尽量给学生展示自己才华的机会，学生也有成就感。

总之，课堂上师生互动，学习气氛很浓，但轻松愉快，学生没有压抑感，说英语成了开心的事。何乐而不为之。

I like both Max’s and Veith’s Effective Teaching

<我喜欢听这两位外国语言教师的课>

I’d like to point out the following four points as their characteristics of teaching:

One: It’s seemed to be with no fixed teaching materials as a so-called textbook but with a perfectly regular teaching idea, both of them were fond of providing interesting stories or something attractive for students further to know in detail, which can always bring students a strong desire to have something to say.

Two: I found them always in good spirits, optimistic, easily amiable or approachable. They are used to come among students, taking part in students’ Pair-Work or Group-Work, helping students to discuss and exchange freely.

Three: According to their given short passages, they select some key words or expressions to explain in detail so as to help students review what they learnt from the flexible papers as the main content for students to discuss.

Four: Both of them prefer to leave much more opportunities to their students playing a young teacher’s role in class so that students can make full use of the opportunities to show their talents with personal experience, and simultaneously make some comments on their classmates’ speech. Thus, students must have a sense of achievement while they are playing a role of English-teacher.

In short, in their classroom, it’s obvious to see the  teacher-student interaction, learning atmosphere very strong, but relaxed and happy, all the students are not suppressed to study hard. Therefore, Speaking in English has become a happy thing. All their students have reason to be willing to learn much more from Max and Veith. 

Note: Max is from the US, and Veith from the UK. Right now both of them are working at a key university of Beijing Municipality.
